Lisa Marie Presley, singer and daughter of Elvis, has died at the age of 54

Presley was rushed to hospital on Thursday night after suffering a suspected heart attack

Lisa Marie Presley, singer and only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley, has died aged 54, after being suddenly hospitalized on Thursday.

His 77-year-old mother confirmed Presley's death on Thursday night.

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to share the devastating news that my beautiful daughter Lisa Marie has left us," Priscilla Presley said in a statement. “She is the most powerful and passionate woman I have ever known. We ask for privacy as we try to deal with this profound loss. Thank you for the love and prayers. There will be no further comment at this time."

Presley was taken to the hospital from his home in Calabasas, California, after a reported heart attack, TMZ first reported. Her mother asked fans to keep her daughter in their prayers in a statement issued when the news first broke.

The Presley family said in a separate statement that they were "shocked and devastated by the tragic death of their beloved Lisa Marie. They are so grateful for everyone's support, love and prayers, and ask for privacy during this very difficult time."

The musician appeared with his mother at the Golden Globes award ceremony in Los Angeles two days before he was hospitalized, as part of a talent pool supporting Baz Luhrmann's hit biopic, Elvis. That night, actor Austin Butler won best actor in a drama for his performance as King.

Presley praised Butler for his performance, saying: “I really didn't know what to do with myself after I saw him. I have to take, like, five days to process it because it's so incredible and so spot on and so authentic.

Tributes to Presley quickly followed news of his death.

John Travolta said on Instagram: “Lisa baby girl I'm sorry. I will miss you but I know I will see you again. My love and heart goes out to Riley, Priscilla, Harper and Finley."

Rita Wilson, actor and wife of Elvis star Tom Hanks, said: “Our hearts are broken by the sudden and shocking passing of Lisa Marie Presley tonight. Tom and I have been spending time with our family during an Elvis movie promotional tour. Lisa Marie is very honest and direct, vulnerable, in a state of anticipation about the film. He spoke so eloquently of his father.”

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys tweeted: “Hard to accept when someone so young and full of life died. I feel very sad about Lisa Marie and I wish her children and her family all the best."

Bette Midler said: “I was shocked. Incredibly beautiful and only 54 years old; I can't really understand it.”

Born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968, Presley was the only child of Elvis and Priscilla Presley. When his parents divorced, Presley moved with his mother to Los Angeles, but would return to his father's home in Memphis, Graceland.

When Elvis died in 1977, nine-year-old Presley became co-heir to his estate with his grandfather, Vernon Presley, and great-grandmother, Minnie Mae Hood Presley. When he was 25, Presley was the only surviving heir to the estate, which was valued at US$100 million at the time. In 2005, he sold most of the plantation business to Media Industri, but retains control of Graceland.

In 1997, Presley released Don't Cry Daddy as a duet with his father's vocals, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of his death. He then followed his father's path into music, releasing three albums: To Whom It Matters (2003), Now What (2005) and Storm & Grace (2012). Presley was married four times. She was married to musician Danny Keough between 1988 and 1994, with whom she has two children: actors Riley Keough and Benjamin Keough, who committed suicide in 2020, aged 27. In an essay for People in 2022, Presley wrote that he felt "devastated" after his son took his own life.

Keough and Presley remained close friends after their divorce, with Keough living in a guest house on his estate until his death. TMZ reports that Keough administered CPR on Presley until paramedics arrived.

Presley married singer Michael Jackson 20 days after divorcing Keough, but they divorced 18 months later; during that time, Presley convinced Jackson to settle the child abuse charges out of court and go to rehab for drug abuse.

"I believed he had done nothing wrong, and that he was wrongly accused and, yes, I began to fall in love with him," she later told a Jackson biographer. “I want to save him. I feel like I can do it.”

In 2000 she became engaged to musician John Oszajca, but broke it off after meeting actor Nicolas Cage at a party. Cage and Presley married in August 2002, but Cage filed for divorce in November.

Presley married guitarist and music producer Michael Lockwood in 2006 and they have twin daughters, Harper and Finley. Presley filed for divorce after 10 years of marriage.

In 2011, he was honored by the governor of Tennessee and the mayor of New Orleans for his charitable efforts.

Presley has been open about his struggles with opioid addiction, writing that he became addicted after the birth of his twins in 2008.

He was a scientist for roughly two decades, but was reported out in 2014. Mother and daughter Riley remain in the church.
