Ukraine news - live: Putin 'tried to freeze Kyiv into submission' as 'boobs heard in Crimea'

The American ambassador to the United Nations condemned Russia's sweeping campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure during a tense Security Council (UNSC) meeting after a deadly missile attack on Polish soil.

Assessments suggested the attack had come from Ukraine but Russian ambassador Vassily Nebenzia accused Kyiv and Poland of using earlier accusations "to provoke direct clashes between Russia and NATO".

Taking the floor, US ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield said: “This tragedy would never have happened except for Russia's needless invasion of Ukraine and its recent missile attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Ms Thomas-Greenfield called Monday's barrage of more than 90 missiles that rained down on Kyiv and other cities, targeting Ukraine's power grid, a "deliberate tactic" by Russian president Vladimir Putin.

"He appears to have decided that if he cannot take Ukraine by force, he will try to freeze the country into submission," he said.

Meanwhile, explosions were reported in Crimea on Wednesday evening. The air defense system was activated in the city of Dhanzkoi in the north of the territory which was annexed by Russia in 2014, according to Ukrinform.
