Trump announcement– live: Trump launches his 2024 campaign as Ivanka and Don Jr miss their Mar-a-Lago speech

'America's comeback starts now,' says twice-impeached former president mired in legal troubles

Donald Trump confirmed his candidacy for the White House in 2024 in a highly anticipated but unsurprising speech at Mar-a-Lago on Tuesday night. The twice impeached former president who tried to overturn the 2020 election results, sparked outrage that led to a Capitol riot, declaring: “America's return begins now.

Among those attending were former first lady Melania Trump, Rep. Madison Cawthorn, adviser Roger Stone, MyPillow conspiracy theorist Mike Lindell, and Trump son-in-law Jared Kushner.

The announcement comes despite a growing movement among Republicans to stay away from Trump after the disastrous midterm results in which a red tide that should not have materialized. Traditional conservatives and Maga believers blame each other for underperformance.

Although the former president faces multiple investigations into his business empire, the January 6 act, and the hoarding of government documents, he appears determined to get another term in office.

Mr Trump is likely to face an uphill battle to win moderate and independent Republicans forward as other GOP presidential hopefuls step forward. Former Vice President Mike Pence told the ABC: "We will have better choices going forward."

Can Trump run for president in 2024?

Donald Trump made history by becoming the first president in US history to be impeached twice by the House of Representatives.

But while losing to Joe Biden in November 2020 may have damaged the prestige of a one-term president and fueled 18 months of lies about ballot box rigging, Trump has now confirmed that he will run again for the White House in 2024.

The former president announced his plans for 2024 on Tuesday at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida.

Trump hasn't stopped fundraising since moving from Washington DC to Florida, raising a war chest of more than $100 million with which he can help propel Republicans who support his "Big Lie" to defeat those in the GOP who don't.

So, if anything, what could prevent him from returning to the office? Read the full story by Graeme Massie, Gustaf Kilander here:
