"Try checking your bag, maybe there are makeup products that are rarely or haven't been used since they were purchased. Then, also check your dressing table. Be careful, don't store make-up products for too long, because there are ages of use and expiration that need to be considered."
A dermatologist emphasized that almost all make-up products are made stable and last for a certain time. If it has passed its useful life, it will appear discolored or less than optimal when used. The worst thing is that it can lead to infection.
Unfortunately, not many products include a shelf life or an expiration date. The following are general guidelines for the shelf life and expiration of make-up products:
Powder, blush and eye shadow
Powdered talcum powder is generally safe to use for up to 2 years, unless there is a change in color or odor. Likewise blush and eye shadow in powder form have a shelf life of 1-2 years. This is because powdered make-up products contain very little water, making it difficult for bacteria to grow.
However, powder make-up products with natural ingredients, such as aloe vera or jojoba, have a slightly different shelf life. This product is out of date, when it seems difficult to blend in with the skin or crumbles more easily.
Also, pay attention to the cleanliness of the brush or sponge to sprinkle the powder on your face, because there may be harmful bacteria in it.
Foundation
Liquid foundation products that are stored properly can be used for up to one year. For sensitive or acne-prone skin, you should avoid putting your finger in the bottle. It is recommended to use a brush or sponge.
Foundation that is not used optimally will appear thicker and uneven when used on the skin. There are several types of infection-causing bacteria that are commonly found in foundation products that are several months old. These bacteria are also a risk for skin health.
Lipstick, lip gloss and lip liner
For lipstick and lip gloss or lip balm, the lifetime is generally around two years. Meanwhile, lip liners can be used for more than two years. Because it is in the form of a pencil, it can be shaved to replace the surface.
If it has passed the usage period, the product for the lips will look dry. Long-lasting lipstick products may have a shorter lifespan than general lipsticks.
Change your lip product immediately, if it looks discolored, smells, or looks like mold. To extend the service life, avoid sharing usage with others.
Mascara and liquid eyeliner
Mascara and liquid eyeliner have a short shelf life, around 3-4 months. Because every time you use it, there is a risk of bacteria entering the packaging.
An expert said the preservatives in these products did not last long. After the period of use, the mascara and eyeliner will feel sticky, the fur on the packaging will appear together and will no longer be able to produce maximum make-up. Eyeliner pencils have a longer life, especially if the surface tip is cleaned and sharpened frequently
To optimize mascara and liquid eyeliner, gently pull and rotate the hilt, avoiding movements such as pumping (in and out) the hilt before applying it.
Nail polish
Generally, the shelf life of nail polish is about 1-2 years. Avoid storing nail polish in the bathroom, because the formula is sensitive to extreme temperatures and humidity.
When nail polish has reached its expiration date, it can be recognized by a change in texture. Expired nail makeup products can spread bacterial and fungal infections.
hair products
Hair products, such as shampoos and conditioners or hair creams, can be used for about a year. Make sure to close the packaging properly after each use. This is done to prevent water or air from damaging the product formula.
The alcohol content that many hair products use as a preservative makes it last longer than other products. Replace this hair product immediately if it smells unusual or looks strange when used.
Apart from paying attention to the product expiration date, it is also important to use make-up according to skin type, for example for oily skin.
Protect yourself from expired make-up products and the risks to your skin. Pay close attention to the lifespan. Also avoid lending each other cosmetic products. Consult a dermatologist if there are changes in the skin or other complaints.
